Generator Maintenance Tips
Practical maintenance habits that keep a diesel generator reliable and protect its resale value.
Run it under load every month
A monthly load run of 20 to 30 minutes circulates lubricant, charges the battery and prevents wet stacking. No-load idling does more harm than good.
Treat the battery as a consumable
Most generator start failures are battery failures. Check terminals, electrolyte and charger output quarterly, and replace batteries proactively rather than after a failed start during an outage.
Keep fuel clean and moving
Diesel degrades and attracts water. Drain the tank sump periodically, replace fuel filters on schedule and avoid storing fuel for very long periods in partially filled tanks.
Watch coolant, hoses and belts
Overheating destroys engines quickly. Inspect coolant level and condition, hose flexibility and belt tension at every service, and clean the radiator core of dust and oil film.
Log every service
A complete service log is worth real money at resale. When you eventually sell to a used DG set dealer in Chennai, documented maintenance directly raises the offer you receive.
